Valve Selection

1) Gun performance is largely a function of your valve. The bigger/faster the valve, the better. 2) Most people end up using sprinkler valves (because 'real' valves are too damned expensive). 1 + 2 got me thinking.... Has anybody ever really studied the problem of which is better; a 1" sprinkler valve or a 3/4" valve? On the surface, a 1" valve would be the obvious choice. Fully open it will provide nearly twice the flow rate as the 3/4" valve. But the parts commonality amongst residential sprinkler valves brings up an interesting point. If one goes with a servo actuator (ie, no manual dump), one is dealing with the same servo for either valve. This means that the air over the diaphram is allowed to escape at the same rate. The 1" valve has a physically larger diaphragm so it must lose more air. The final result of this rambling is to point out that a 3/4" valve will open faster than a 1" valve. So we've got competing factors: Bigger valves open further but they take longer to do so. Thus my question: Has anybody studied the problem to the extent that he/she can make some sort of definative statement about unmodified sprinkler valve usage in pneumatic cannons?
