Does the shocktech BOMB 3-way need hats?

Hi,
I have a shocktech bomb 3-way and the nipples are so close together that hats won't fit on them. Has anyone else had this problem? Can you just leave the hats off and just stick the hoses on? Or will they blow off when you do this?
