Modern Paintball World Cup 2002

Modern Paintball is a new magazine format video program distributed on DVD with a retail price of $5.95 per issue.  The DVD uses an animated main menu to select between various video chapters, much like browsing through articles in a print magazine.

Host Mickey Walker introduces the magazine, and narrates the various segments.  The main article in this edition is the highlight reel from the 2002 World Cup, which includes footage from various games at the tournament.  Player interviews provide the point of view of the competitors in addition to the game action.  Key semifinal and finals games are selected which lead to Trauma taking first place Amateur, and Walker explains the scoring along the way.

Additional chapters include new products from various companies at the trade show, a tour through Challenge Park Xtreme and an Airgun Designs Level 10 demonstration.

Modern Paintball goes to a Static AKA practice session prior to World Cup, and follows the team through field walking, and pratice games.  Walker then interviews players about the different strategies they use for their positions.

The downside of the DVD is that the image quality and camera work on the game footage are not at the same level of quality as some of the major commercial paintball videos on the market today.  Also, the games highlighted in this issue did not include any of the pro ranked teams - the focus was on amateurs - which in the case of World Cup made quite a story as Trauma made an unprecidented fifth win in a row.

On the flip side, Modern Paintball’s price tag is is groundbreaking for paintball videos.  It is less than one fourth that of most paintball videos, and it's on DVD.  Its chapter based magazine format makes it easy to navigate through the various articles to get straight to what you are looking for.  Modern Paintball DVD is also available on a subscription basis, where new issues come in the mail.  Six issue subscriptions offer a 30 percent discount off the cover price, delivering even more bang for the buck.  Look for new episodes to follow up this first issue, with Modern Paintball covering events including the 2003 Huntington Beach NPPL and Mardi Gras Open tournaments.
