Thoughts and Observations - NPPL Miami

The tournament was very well run and organized. 1. The referees were all identically attired in black and white jerseys, and black trousers. Each jersey had a number, making identification of referees easy. 2. The referees were not members of NPPL teams. They were knowledgable, and there were very few complaints about the officiating. 3. A "press tent" was set up with electricity and internet access. 4. Helicopter rides were available for aerial photography. On the downside: 1. The awards ceremony was held late, (9:00 PM), necessitating an extra day's stay for many players and teams. There was some grumbling about it, and some teams declined to make the ceremony. On the other hand, it did give people a chance to clean up and change clothes, and the venue (Bongo's Cuban Cafe, at the American Airlines Arena) was solid. It was class. 2. Following the ceremonies, there was a tawdry exhibition by someone who thought it might be neat to show off his . . . assets. Apparently he forgot that there were children in the audience, and that paintball is striving to present itself as being more "family friendly." This stunt in front of kids, women, and representatives of the NPPL's TV partner, Fox Sports Net, probably did not do a hell of a lot of good for the sport, even if it was intended to be in fun.
