Expansion_Chamber/Regulator Setup

I hear it's a bad thing to put an Expansion chamber downstream of a regulator (CO2 flows from: Tank -> Regulator -> Expansion_Chamber -> PBgun)...I hear this type of setup can produce "hotshots"...but how bad is it really? or is this just a myth?

I'm not absolutely positive on how the regulators actually work. Do they let a certain ammount of air into the gun, but then they don't let it back out?

Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated.
