: whats the difference between co2 and nitrogen and compressed air? CO2 is carbon dioxide. Commonly used in carbonated beverages. Under pressure, it turns into a liquid (like propane). This causes problems when the liquid changes to gas (requires energy, which cools the CO2). Also, if the liquid gets into a reg or the gun, it will cause problems (can freeze seals and cause pressure spikes). The pressure of CO2 varies depending on temperature & % fill (see http://www.warpig.com/paintball/technical/gasses/co2pv.gif). It's usually used in unregulated aluminum bottles. Nitrogen (N2) a gas that's inert for paintball purposes. It stays gaseous under pressure (for our purposes). It requires a HPA (High Pressure Air) system, which includes a regulator. Paintball tanks have a maximum of 3000 or 4500psi. It comes from industrial air suppliers either in large bulk tanks. Compressed air is what it says. Functionally, it's the same as nitrogen. It's filled by a compressor. All compressors have filters, and the ones in scuba shops have several - which means a very clean fill. Clear as mud, right?
