I don't know and have never heard of a max limit on the gunners up here, we usually have 4 or 5 but managed to squeeze in 8 active gunners once.
Lining up the trailer and tow vehicle ahead of time will certainly save you a whole mess of headaches. Wish we had done that at the beginning.
