Seems to me that if you're looking to build a tank you might as well use something that the
miltiary felt was up to their standards, so
why not look for a REAL vehicle?

Here's a brief list of sites which have assorted
miltary vehicles for sale. Some have photos to
let you see what sort of condition they're in.

just do what I did and enter the term
surplus military vehicle in goggle..

PS Found several sites which featured
kits for converting everything from VWs
to pickups into Humvee like vehicles for
lots less than the showroom models.
