Welcome to the fun and challenging job of being a referee! Well, I've been referee'ing for about less then a year at EMR Paintball Park. So far I've learned alot there, maybe a little bit of what I've learned can be any advice for you. First of all, I've learned there's 2 types of referee's. The tournament ref's and the scenario/rec ball refs. I'm guessing you could be a scenario/rec ball ref, so here's my best advice:
1. SAFETY FIRST! Remember, Your out there for Safety First. Good rule is, if you have your goggles on, they should have theirs on. Also at the end of a game, good rule of thumb is when the game is over, everyones at the dead zone, tell all the players to raise their markers to see their barrel covers. Once everyone has all their covers on, then call an All Clear and remove their goggles.
2. KEEP MOVING. Don't stand in one spot if there's a firefight around. Make your way around all the players, look for hits. If you've played enough, you should know what a hit is and what a splat is.
3. You Will Get Hit. No matter what, your a ref, there's something about an orange jersey that attracts paintballs like a magnet. Don't fear it, it's part of the sport. Hopefully the players will try and avoid shooting you, but sooner or later....
4. Be Fair. Your out there to be the neutral person between both sides. You call the hits as you see them. Most field owners will back up their referee's call, which is always final. If they want to talk to you after the game about a call, let them and explain why you pulled them out. Don't discuss it while a game is in play.
5. Don't ever ever touch a player, his equipment, etc. It could get bad, even legally. Avoid it.
6. Remember, the players are there to have fun. If there's new players, 1st timers there, help them out when you can. Good Referee's will keep the players coming back to a Fun, SAFE field.
