"Are Oklahomans richer than the rest of the country?"

Richer? Maybe not. Are more of them employed, and feel more secure in their jobs? Yes.

Some comparisons:
(From http://data.bls.gov/servlet/SurveyOutputServlet?series_id=LASST40000003&data_tool="EaG")

Date----Texas --------------------- Oklahoma
Jan 00 - 4.7 ------------------------ 2.9
Jun 00 - 5.0 ------------------------ 3.4
Jan 01 - 3.7 ------------------------ 3.0
Jun 01 - 5.1 ------------------------ 3.8
Jan 02 - 5.6 ------------------------ 4.4
Jun 02 - 6.8 ------------------------ 4.4
Jan 03 - 6.5 ------------------------ 5.0

Compare these figures to this:
http://www.houston.org/blackfenders/unemploydata.htm

So you can see, Oklahoma has consitently been FAR below Houston, and even below the national average, with regard to it's unemployment rate.

Those who live here have seen the domino effect that started with Enron, and was catapulted by the events of 9/11. HP and Compaq (both with major operations here) merged and downsized, sending thousnds out to pasture to keep the Enron folks company. Everything from oil tooling companies to the largest grocery chain in Houston have followed. We all keep hoping that "the last one will be the last one" with regard to major companies folding. But, just about the time we are about to begin breathing easier and working to rebuild, another major company announces that they are down-sizing or closing their doors altogether.

But this is Houston. We've bounced back from worse. I just keep waiting for us to hit bottom so we can bounce. ;^)
